Christopher’s on Savignyplatz: Philipp recommends Casual Fine Dining
I’ll admit: I’m a total foodie and love to try new restaurants! My last culinary adventure brought a good friend and me to Christopher’s in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
A Culinary Expedition
It truly was a culinary expedition. We enjoyed a surprise three-course meal accompanied by the perfect wine. What should I say? Rarely have I ever experience such an amazing explosion of tastes. It all started with the appetiser. I had the beef tartare with pumpkin and pretzel breadsticks, and my friend had the trout with golden beets and horseradish. What a treat! We shared all 3 courses so that we could try them all. Even though I’m not a big fan of horseradish, I truly enjoyed it in combination with the trout. Sometimes it’s all about the proper combination of ingredients.
The Concept: Casual Fine Dining
Christopher’s is elegantly furnished and doesn’t overdo it, something the owners highly value. That’s why the restaurant (named after the chef Christopher) lives up to the concept of “Casual Fine Dining”. There’s not need to arrive in a tux or evening gown. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, just like the owners. Restaurant manager and wine connoisseur David Monnie is a gastronomer with heart and soul, which was reflected in all three courses.
The main course was “Catch of the day with celery and fumet”. I just love fish and it was indeed so well prepared that it almost melted on my tongue. The combination with the celery and fumet (fish stock) was nothing short of fantastic.
Desserts for all Senses
Of course, I saved the best for last: the dessert. I have a big sweet tooth and simply can’t resist chocolate, custards and cakes - even though you might not notice. ;-) The first dessert was caramel-chocolate with plum, cinnamon and hibiscus. The second was yogurt ice cream with pear, cherry plums and cookie crumbs. I’ve gotta say it was better than sex! Seriously, I’ve seldom eaten such a well-matched dessert. It was truly an experience for the senses!
Bottom line: I’ll be back!
I’ve got to be real: I initially thought this was just a fancy restaurant with overpriced food that tastes mediocre but in no way justifies the price. There are lots of restaurants like that. But honestly, I could not have been more wrong! Although the food is served up like in gourmet restaurant, the casual atmosphere and personnel eliminate all doubts. I have rarely eaten so well in such a pleasant atmosphere with such friendly waiters. If you’re looking for extraordinarily good food and wine at fair prices, I can absolutely recommend Christopher’s.
