Homomonument: Queer Memorial in the heart of the city
A pink granite triangle
In the center of Amsterdam, not far from Kaizersgracht, a unique monument commemorates the persecution and suppression of gay people and members of the LGBT community. The memorial was the first of its kind in the world and is dedicated to those who have been subjected to oppression, violence and persecution for their homosexuality. The shape of the triangle and the pink color recall the angle that homosexual prisoners had to carry in German concentration camps during the Second World War.
