MAMA VÂN: Tobi tests Berlin´s Viet hot spot
Vietnamese cuisine has always been one of my culinary favorites. After all, we owe the likeable country in the Far East delicious classics such as summer rolls and pho soup - dishes that enjoy huge popularity all over the world. In a prime location, directly on Alexanderplatz in Berlin Mitte, the cozy restaurant MAMA VÂN has been offering the latest trend from Vietnam for about half a year now: called Bánh mì. Reason enough for me to pay a visit to the new Food Hot Spot.

The latest trend from Vietnam
Berlin's foodies are crazy about Bánh mì and MAMA VÂN is supposed to serve the best ones. It is a crispy, gluten-free rice bun which is topped with fresh salad, chicken, tofu or crunchy vegetables depending on variety and your taste. MAMA VÂN offers six different variations; every single one looks delicious and is totally affordable with a maximum of € 5. I choose a BÁNH MÌ GÀ-chicken and homemade mayonnaise. All Bánh mìs are also served with cucumbers, leeks, chili, carrots pickled in rice vinegar and a lot of coriander. Already after the first bite I am in Foodi-heaven. The fresh ingredients along with the homemade sauce according to the old family recipe make such a great combination.

Authentic and fresh
Of course, next to the incredibly delicious Bánh mì I will try some other highlights of the menu. In addition to the tasty rice bun, the family-run business also stands out with its range of spicy bowls, crispy salads and authentic curries. I try the GỎI XU HÀO GÀ salad, which is already available for 3.90 €. The kohlrabi carrot salad with chicken meat tastes just fantastic. Fresh coriander and peanuts give the salad a very special touch.
